You Are Your Child’s First Teacher by Rahima Baldwin Dancy

I’m not sure what to say about this book. The full title is You Are Your Child’s First Teacher: What Parents Can Do With and For Their Children from Birth to Age Six. I picked it up because I figured it would help me in my early homeschooling. Here’s a little from the back of the book:

“As a parent today, you face a daunting dilemma: How do you best support and enhance your child’s development in the early years – the years in which you are your child’s first teacher? Early childhood Waldorf educator Rahima Baldwin Dancy speaks up for a fresh sensibility about raising children, one that helps children be children while enabling you to recognize your important role as a parent. Completely revised and updated from the 1989 first edition, You Are Your Child’s First Teacher offers new ways of seeing and understanding your child that will provide fertile ground for your own creativity and help increase your confidence in what you are doing. Making the most of the magical years from birth to age size will enrich the lives of you and your child now and for years to come.”

The book wasn’t quite what I was expecting but there were a lot of good parts to it. If you don’t know anything about how Waldorf education works and Rudolf Steiner’s teachings, this book will teach you about them but that’s not what it’s meant to do. It has great info on helping your baby, toddler and young child to fully develop at a medium pace. Steiner’s teachings are that before the age of about seven (when adult teeth erupt) a child should be learning through play, including imitation and imagination. Steiner did not believe in lessons, worksheets and concepts being taught during that period. So the book explains typical physical, intellectual and emotional development of the age group and how to encourage the correct type of play/toys/activities to enhance these skills. For example in Waldorf schools and daycare, children play with expressionless dolls (so they can be any emotion), toys made out of natural materials (both for safety and health) and do art on rounded pieces of papers and model with beeswax (because sharp corners and hard clay aren’t good for young children.)

I do agree with some of Steiner’s teachings but not all. Some of them seem to excessive to me. If however, you agree wholeheartedly with Steiner’s teachings and intend to raise your child in a Waldorf setting, you will definitely love this book and would probably rate it a 41/2 to 5.

The most interesting parts were about nursery rhymes and fairy tales and they’re role in early childhood education and the suggestions for celebrating and learning the festivals and seasons.

At the end of each chapter is a list of recommended reading and sometimes organization and stores to contact. There are also 5 appendices: Sources for Steiner Books, Rudolf Steiner and Waldorf Education, Alliance for Childhood, Waldorf Teacher Training Programs and School Associations and Seminars on Waldorf Early Childhood Education. Although I don’t agree with everything and outright disagree with some of it, I’m glad I read the book and I got something out of it. I have a large list of books to check out and some new activities to try (watercolor, beeswax modeling.)

    • Does your child take an hour or more to get dressed because most of her clothes don’t feel right against her skin and she complains about the seams in her socks?
    • Is he constantly on the move and if ‘made’ to stay still, constantly squirming in his chair and acting up?
    • Does a walk around the block take over an hour because she keeps stopping to investigate the smallest thing? Like the ants on the ground or a loose balloon floating up so high you can barely see it?
    • Are his feelings hurt really easily? Is he overly dramatic and does his emotions change quickly? Does she lock into her point of view and refuse to waver?

      Perhaps his first reaction to every question or suggestion is no. Maybe she is very serious or has irregular eating and sleeping habits.

    If any of these describe one or more of your children, than this in THE book for you.

    I received this book from Multnomah Books and I wanted to review it for Mother’s Day but I didn’t get to finish it in time.
    Rattled is a Christian Parenting book for soon-to-be-moms and new-moms. I’m not Christian but I can’t say no to a parenting book so I wanted to take a look at this. Have survived two baby’s first years I feel I am qualified to determine if this book would be helpful to a new mom. Certainly, as a mom of 4, Trish Berg is qualified to write a book about parenting.


  • Any toy that can encourage a child to help with household chores is a good toy in my opinion. Add quality wooden construction, and I am sold! Magic Cabin offers a Child's Cleaning Set that contains real cleaning tools. The set includes a metal dustpan and broom, string mop, and a broom; all child-sized!

    This is a great pagan parenting book with great sabbat sections. The book has original stories by the authors.

  • Holiday season fanfare has already begun, and I am reminded of my holiday motto: No more junk toys! Whether you celebrate Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, and/or the Winter Solstice, if you have children, you know what junk toys are. Junk toys are toys that will have little educational value, are usually made of plastic, are overly commercial, and end up in our landfills. Green parents often try to make these toys disappear, but it is better to prevent their buying and giving in the first place.

    Willie’s Dad is a picture book for children who have parents in Prison. Willie is a five year old boy whose father has been in prison almost his whole life and who will be there until he’s a grown man. Willie and his Mother don’t visit his Father very often and when they do, they go with Duane, who is growing attached to Willie’s mom. His father makes a selfless decision and tells Duane to go ahead and marry the mother because Willie needs a dad and he’s a good man.

    The story is pretty good and it’s nice to see a book for children on a subject not often seen. Unfortunately there are quite a few children who have a parent in prison and who could use this book.

  • I essentially agree with Mr. G that Provigil doesn't really increase intelligence, it's actually a lot like the amphetamines that students take during exam week -- it creates a temporary state of hyperarousal which allows for intense concentration. But what if there was a treatment that could be given to children which would, in fact, cause them to have permanently enhanced mental capabilities?

    Notice I didn't say, "make them more intelligent," because we already know that there isn't a single quality that's synonymous with intelligence. There are various capacities that don't necessarily go together. I would guess that John Coltrane had a reasonably high IQ but I really don't care. And Daniel Goleman's book Emotional Intelligence was very helpful to me in explicating the very different realms of intellectual and social competence.


  • This week's geek is about story telling. This one is kind of interesting as it can go into many directions. In books, I like first person narrations as well as dialogue writing. It truly depends on what kind of stories I am interested in.

    However, I am not going to talk about books here. Or Movies or TV. I like theatre very much. The kind, which is live and involves all our senses. One can almost feel as if one is a part of it.

  • I came into London today to talk on a local radio show about my book. It was a very strange thing to do. Not only sitting in a dark booth at BBC studios infront of a console with such a bewildering array of buttons and dials that it looked like we were about to take off, but just the talking about the book at all. Writing it was bad enough. It is definitely not a comfortable thing to publicise. I have been psyching myself up for it for weeks, though I was very glad to get it over and done with today, particulary given the cold I have. But the presenter's reaction was so lovely, and in a way unexpected. I assumed like most people his interest would be in the homelessness bit and how I wrote the blog. He did talk about the shame and secrecy of homelessness, and how it had been for me living in the car for those nine months, but he focussed mostly on the earlier part of the book — on some of the childhood stuff.

  • Your English teacher was right! Reading is good for you!

    An NEA paper, "To Read or Not to Read," surveying 40 studies of child and adult reading, reports that reading for pleasure and personal interest has declined drastically over the past few years. Unlike the 2004 report, this study included literature, informational reading, periodicals, and internet reading and still found that the average adult spends only seven minutes reading anything by choice per day.

    This book was read for the Celebrate the Author challenge and the Heart of a Child challenge.

    So I read this when I was a child although I didn’t really remember much about it. What a cute little book! Just like how she captured the thoughts of Socks the cat in her book Socks, Beverly Cleary has captured the thoughts of a five year old rambunctious girl. I don’t remember much about being five but I’ve worked with five year olds and I do think that most of how Ramona behaves and what she thinks is consistent with a five year old. Ramona is what we are now calling a Spirited Child.

    I got this book for review from Annick Press. I also read it as part of the Baby Steps challenge.

    This book was very interesting. I’m not usually one for Science Fiction type books, especially ones that depict a very high tech future, however this one intrigued me. In this “near-future” advertising has taken on a whole new meaning. Cars have ID so that when you go through a Drive-Thru, a sign overhead can greet you by name. It also automatically debits your account when you make a purchase. Children are outfitted with Safety Sentinel’s which is basically a GPS tracker to keep track of where your children are. There are ads on the back of cars so the car behind it can see them. There are large ads on the sides of buildings. Life-sized dummies just inside stores talk about the stores features and sales. It’s crazy!

    Summary: The only witness to a tragedy loses her memory and an innocent may be in prison for the crime. Whale Song asks the difficult questions: which is the higher morality - love or law?

    I wasn't sure what to expect from this book other than there would be whales in it. The summary above comes from the back of the book and doesn't say much. I'll tell you a little more about the book so you can properly decide if it's your kind of book but don't worry, I'd never reveal too much or spoil and ending.

    The main character is an 11 year old girl whose family moves to a small town where most of the inhabitants are Native Canadians. The book is Children's Fiction but for older children, say 12 and up. A large portion of the book has stories, myths and history of Native Canadians, specifically Huuayaht. I found this very interesting.

  • It's the end of November, I can hardly believe it. Where has this year gone?

    Like I mentioned yesterday, my book club met on Wednesday. This time we discussed The Stolen Child by Keith Donohue, a book inspired by the W.B. Yeats poem of the same title. Of course, I left my copy of the book at work so I don't have it with me to reference as I write this post (but, c'est la vie).

    The author of The Bare Naked Book and Red is Best has a new book!

    Summary: The farm is the perfect place for a little girl's playful - and sometimes surprising - observations of the things found "inside" other things. With questions that encourage preschoolers to chime in, this delightful picture book is an ideal read-aloud.

    My daughter likes this book, marketed for ages 2-5. Children of this age love repetition and while the things keep changing, the fact that they are inside something else doesn’t and I think that’s what will attract children to it. Also a question is asked first (Can a tree have a cow in it?) which encourages children to interact and give an answer. My daughter found this fun.

  • I'm at a meeting of grantees of a federal initiative called the National Child Traumatic Stress Network. This program, administered by the Center for Mental Health Services, aims at strengthening capacity within the U.S. to provide treatment to children who have suffered psychological trauma -- and no, it's not principally about drugs, but about evidence based counseling.


  • Celebration Edition Over 20 Years in Print

    I received this book for review from Annick Press.

    I've read a LOT of potty books lately as I'm trying to train my 2 year old but this one is different (in a good way.) Instead of showing how a child goes potty, it shows what would happen if different animals tried to use the toilet. For example, an elephant would crush it to pieces, a lion would think it was it's throne and a seal would slip right off the seat.

    This new edition has new illustrations and a few new creatures added. The back says: "Guaranteed to bring on giggles, Toilet Tales is the perfect companion for both the toilet-ready toddler and kids who have passed this stage." I have to agree with that. Kids in the (anal stage ??) would love this book since they are so focused on toilet habits. My daughter loves it.

  • I'm not a clinician, I'm here as a project evaluator with the intention of getting sense of the what the field of mental health care for traumatized children is like these days -- at least for those community based agencies and academic experts who are fortunate enough to have support from SAMHSA as part of the National Child Traumatic Stress Network.

    There's plenty of good news here -- then I'll give you the bad news.

    Good news bulletin #1: I have heard scarcely a word about psych meds. The only way pills have come up is as a peripheral note that somebody who is part of a case scenario had been prescribed something. The NCTSN is not about drugging kids.

    Bulletin #2: The DSM-IV is equally conspicuous by its absence. There is absolutely no interest in classifying kids' problems as diseases, tossing around disease categories, or using diagnostic labels to guide treatment.

  • Barbara Burke in the new JAMA reviews Bipolar Children: Cutting Edge Controversy, Insights, and Research, Edited by Sharna Olfman. Unfortunately, it's subscription only, but I'll give you a fair-use quote:

    IN EUROPE AND ACROSS THE GLOBE, MANIC DEPRESSION IS rarely diagnosed in the pediatric population. In the United States, on the other hand, the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (AACAP) suggests that it may exist in up to 13% of children.1 Prescriptions of sedating drugs (anticonvulsants, -agonists, and atypical antipsychotics) have increased up to 3-fold in the last decade.2 Both of these anomalous trends, poorly substantiated by quality research, have occurred during a time of dramatic economic change in the health care industry. Meanwhile, US children appear to be getting less mentally healthy, not more, with diagnoses of “mood disorders” and “pediatric bipolar” (PBD) topping the list. This is clearly crazy, but where does the madness lie? In the children, the prescribers, or society as a whole?
