← Me.
Actual recent photo!
Today is [was] my birthday!
Yayyyyy! Happy Birthday To Me!
What did I do on my birthday?
Ummm….. → WORKED!
I saw not one moment of this day outside the parameters of my torture chamber, until it was already quite dark outside.
Then I came here to Chapters, where I am right now, in the Starbucks area. Sipping on some terrific coffee and listening to some terrible Christmas music. I know this cannot be a popular thing I am about to say [because both of these boys’ album sales are through the roof] but seriously, is there any music worse than a) Michael Buble and b) Josh Groban?
What’s that you say?
Melissa Etheridge?
Yes, you’ve got a good point there, she is definitely c) on such a listing.
Thing is, everywhere [including here at Chapters] seems to be piping the new Josh Groban Christmas CD through the roofbeams and it is making me crazy!
You know who I wish would put out a Christmas CD?
→ Tool.
OK, that’s my rant.
It’s my birthday. I won’t tell you my age, but I will say that based on a 365-day year, I am living my 16,060th day, today!

I’m wondering. Do you have any real favorite type of Christmas music?
For me, there is no question, I love the old old songs, as sung by either Bing Crosby or Frank Sinatra.
Mmmm, I have several CD compilations, I think I will lend one to the manager of Chapters!
What is your own personal favorite?
NOTE: If you say “Josh Groban” I am afraid I will have to promptly delete your smart-alecky comment!

Here is the criteria, the rationale, the raison d’etre:

  • In doctor’s waiting-rooms, a decade or two ago, the tedium would have been relieved with quiet background music: sentimental songs from Broadway, popular classics like Vivaldi’s Four Seasons. Nowadays, however, one hears only the thudding, mechanical music favoured by the young. Their cowed elders bear it without protest: faute de mieux it has become their music too.

  • I could sit at Chapters for 18 hours a day, day after day, and never be bored.
Anyone who knows me, knows that this is true.

I could do it. I could live at Chapters.
    However, I should clarify something.
It is not the bookstore itself that I am really addicted to.

  • Well, here I am on the final leg of my holidays.

At the end of each year I like to reflect upon the books I have read over the past 12 months. I reminisce about each one and see which come to the forefront as being especially memorable and worthwhile.

  • -- Montreal --

Some of you may be wondering where I was all weekend.
The Bookpuddle has been silent of its usual ripples.
    Montreal.
    That’s where I was… oh yes, now I remember.
    Montreal is a nutso place!
And while there, I discovered something I had not known about this city.
[Girlfriends, listen up. →] Montreal has the largest interconnected underground shopping system in the entire world.
    That’s right. Not just Canada.
    No.

  • Tonight I finished reading a terrific book.
A Widow For One Year, by John Irving.
I am not kidding, I think that Irving is perhaps thee most entertaining and engaging of authors that I have encountered in a long while.
A wonderful storyteller. I could listen to him forever.
For most true readers, Irving is not exactly a new discovery. For me, however, he is relatively a new find.
While reading this book in several coffee-shops, I’ve noticed that the majority of people that have seen its easily recognizable cover have felt the need to comment, along the lines of the following:
“Oh, that’s a good one, huh? Are you enjoying it?”
    Or…

Granted, I am not even half-through Mark Haddon’s newest novel, A Spot of Bother [lately, I only have about an hour a day to read…. so busy am I] but the thing is fantastic.

  • Well, today was back to reality.
I had six days off, and that is a rare thing for me… workaholic that I am!
My next vacation is in August.
    That's like an ETERNITY away!
    Ho-hum!
Must make little stones out of real big stones, until then!
I spent those six days of vacation with my best friend, and one of the things we managed to accomplish was the complete restoration of over 3,000 songs on my iTunes Library.
I lost all of them earlier this year in the Great Hard-Drive Crash of 2008!
    Remember that? Remember my anguish?
Restoration was a lot of work, but fun, and worth it all.
