Hogtown hot streak rolls on

Suddenly Paul Maurice is the reincarnation of Hap Day and John Ferguson Junior is but the ghostly resemblance of Conn Smythe.
Well not quite, but things are certainly much more positive around the Maple Leaf Nation these days as the Blue and White rattled off their third consecutive win, a rather convincing victory over a particularly disinterested looking Nashville Predators.
With outstanding goal tending from Vesa Toskala and the suddenly highlight goal scoring prowess of Wade Belak, the Leafs dismissed their southern guests by a score of 3-1.
It was by no means a barn burner, full of end to end action. For the most part the Leafs capitalized on sloppy play by the Preds and some challenging moments in the nets for their goaltender Chris Mason.
Things went so bad for the Preds, that Belak perhaps having a premonition of the fame to come, chose not to engage Darcy Hordichuk in the obligatory dust up, instead taking flight down the ice and his moment of destiny with the goal scorers list.
It was perhaps the perfect night for the Maple Leaf Nation, the hated Senators once again stumbled in a 4-3 loss to Tampa Bay and the Leafs have moved into eighth place, a playoff spot for the first time in the last number of weeks.
As for the circus that seems to be the Leafs off ice environment of late, all is quiet from the executive offices. With Richard Peddie apparently having been administered the Leaf version of Omerta, keeping out of sight, out of mind and out of the headlines.
Which is just fine with the Leaf fans, the only headlines they want to see these days are Leafs win again... one they've seen three games in a row.
One only wonders what sacrifices were offered up to bring such a change of fortune?

  • Here's a challenge, perhaps a dare. Find me a home to rent. It needs to be in View Royal, Langford, Colwood, Mill Bay, Shawnigan, maybe Cobble Hill. It must have 3 bedrooms up, 3 bedrooms (or 2 bedrooms and den / office) down (down is a suite). They must be separate living spaces. The lower suite must be above ground, with minimum 8 foot ceilings and large windows. The house must have a garage and a decent sized yard. The house must be available to rent April 1st or later.

All this for $2500 a month.

If you can find me this house, I will seriously consider renting it. I don't think it exists. I'd love to be wrong.

Yes, according to The Globe and Mail, and specifically Douglas Porter, deputy chief economist at BMO Nesbitt Burns Inc., the housing boom in Canada is now officially over. First quarter statistics are what helped him come to that conclusion.

Certainly, we are seeing this in Victoria. Inventory is ballooning and sales are the lowest in years.

Will we follow in the footsteps of our neighbours south of the border? Perhaps. Perhaps not. But the market is definitely not what it was in the previous 2 or 3 years.

  • Something's very different on the picket line.

Since Thanksgiving, the energy on the picket lines has fallen off. One picketer was even seen reading a book while he walked the picket line.

It seems like only yesterday that we were chanting to stop trucks from crossing the picket line or "2-4-6-8, Why won't they negotiate." The turnout and the energy paid off. The AMPTP rejoined us at the negotiating table and that was great.

    But now....we wait....in a news blackout.

Getting the agreement to restart the negotiations felt climactic, because so much energy had to be expended to get the AMPTP to do the right thing, but "restarting" the talks didn't mean "concluding" them.

Not "some accountant in one of the AMPTP companies"...every single company has done extensive financial analysis on this situation, and it's what will drive all decisions made from the AMPTP side.

Business decisions from executive management are based almost exclusively on finances...and often short term finances over long- or medium-term finances.

AMPTP knows exactly when this strike will end.
