A deep breath and back to work

Hour four of the deadline marathon sees only a couple of deals unfold, with Ottawa finally showing signs of movement towards the end of the hour. No major names but some interesting pieces of the various puzzles being shifted around the league.

Before the Senators pick up some assistance however there is word of moves out of Colorado, where Ruslan Salei makes his plans to head for Florida while the Panthers pick up Karlis Skrastins and a third round pick.

Chicago then steps up to make a few changes to their line up, first off they deal Tuomo Ruutu to Carolina receiving Andrew Ladd in return,

The Hawks then move Martin Lapointe on to the Senators, for a sixth round draft pick a rather solid move for Bryan Murray who loses no players and picks up some more charcter for the dressing room.

  • According to SDLookup, Rancho Bernardo 92128 currently has 310 listings for sale. For a population of 42,728, that gets us a listing per population ratio of 1:138. Should this ratio be lower? Is 92128 also suffering from the phantom inventory phenomenon?

  • Here's a challenge, perhaps a dare. Find me a home to rent. It needs to be in View Royal, Langford, Colwood, Mill Bay, Shawnigan, maybe Cobble Hill. It must have 3 bedrooms up, 3 bedrooms (or 2 bedrooms and den / office) down (down is a suite). They must be separate living spaces. The lower suite must be above ground, with minimum 8 foot ceilings and large windows. The house must have a garage and a decent sized yard. The house must be available to rent April 1st or later.

All this for $2500 a month.

If you can find me this house, I will seriously consider renting it. I don't think it exists. I'd love to be wrong.

  • Thanks to anonymous for mentioning this occasion on Craigslist.

Yes, according to The Globe and Mail, and specifically Douglas Porter, deputy chief economist at BMO Nesbitt Burns Inc., the housing boom in Canada is now officially over. First quarter statistics are what helped him come to that conclusion.

Certainly, we are seeing this in Victoria. Inventory is ballooning and sales are the lowest in years.

Will we follow in the footsteps of our neighbours south of the border? Perhaps. Perhaps not. But the market is definitely not what it was in the previous 2 or 3 years.

Sure enough, out of a population of 47,217, there's only 173 listings, translating to a listing per population ratio of 1:273, in stark contrast to 92127's 1:69.

  • Something's very different on the picket line.

Since Thanksgiving, the energy on the picket lines has fallen off. One picketer was even seen reading a book while he walked the picket line.

It seems like only yesterday that we were chanting to stop trucks from crossing the picket line or "2-4-6-8, Why won't they negotiate." The turnout and the energy paid off. The AMPTP rejoined us at the negotiating table and that was great.

    But now....we wait....in a news blackout.

Getting the agreement to restart the negotiations felt climactic, because so much energy had to be expended to get the AMPTP to do the right thing, but "restarting" the talks didn't mean "concluding" them.

  • Ooopsie, a little preview of the NHL Awards slipped out of the NHL head office on Friday as the NHL on line shopping portal, shop.nhl.com , apparently provided a sneak look at what the best dressed fans of what will be this years Hart Trophy winner will want to be wearing. .In what passes for the best that they could think of for damage control the NHL is busy denying that anything of such nature took place..
The NHL clothing marketing line will apparently include a lovely medium blue tee shirt emblazoned with the likeness of Alexander Ovechkin, who if the leaked material is any indication is this years NHL MVP.

  • Responding to my post ("The Faces of the Strike") earlier today, Anonymous said what a lot of us have been thinking. I think it's worth reprinting in its entirety.

    Anonymous said...

Not "some accountant in one of the AMPTP companies"...every single company has done extensive financial analysis on this situation, and it's what will drive all decisions made from the AMPTP side.

Business decisions from executive management are based almost exclusively on finances...and often short term finances over long- or medium-term finances.

AMPTP knows exactly when this strike will end.

  • Dress for success; is this the key to a winning broadcast this year?

The first thing that jumps out as we settle in for these seven hours of the circles of hell known as the trading deadline, is that we should make sure that the coffee urn is always full, this may be a long, long morning.

As the big network shows get underway though it seems that fashion statements are going to be the most obvious thing to talk about in the early rounds.

If we are to judge our content by the way it looks, then all business is taking on casually informative as the opening hour gets underway.

Ties it seems are not only frowned upon in the new NHL, they’re also an optional fashion accessory at Sportsnet. As the first hour of the trading shows winds down, it would seem that like prisoners heading for lock up, the ties and loose clothing have been collected at the door.

Across Canada today, shock greeted the news of Bourdon’s passing, the tragic victim of a traffic accident just miles from his hometown.
